Portland State Men’s Basketball Coach Tyler Geving has announced the signing of Deontae North to a national letter of intent for the 2016-17 season. He will be a junior with two years of eligibility remaining.

North is a 6-4 guard from South Plains Junior College in Levelland, TX. He averaged 12.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in 2015-16. North also shot .392 from three-point range, making 65 three-pointers in 28 games. North was named first team All-Region and earned Fiesta Bowl tournament MVP honors. The Texans were 21-9 overall, 12-4 in conference play.

“Deontae is a kid we recruited in high school and we have seen him play a lot over the last four years. He is a 6-4 wing who can shoot, score and put it on the floor at this level,” said Viking Coach Tyler Geving. “He was also very successful in a very good junior college league in Texas.”

Coincidently, Portland State’s last two leading scorers both played at Texas junior colleges (DaShaun Wiggins, 12.9 in 2013-14 and 15.7 in 2014-15; and Cameron Forte, 19.2 in 2015-16).

Originally from Corona, CA, North spent his freshman season at Long Beach State, averaging 3.4 points in 12.8 minutes per game.

North attended Centennial High School where he was a first-team Open Division All-CIF selection and MaxPreps.com 3rd team All-State selection. He averaged 18.8 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.6 steals as a senior and was named the Riverside Press-Enterprise Inland Empire Player of the Year. North led his team to a 29-4 record and 10-0 league mark. The Huskies reached the Southern Section Open Division Championship and the Division I CIF Finals.

North is the fifth student-athlete to sign with Portland State for 2016-17. The Vikings have three starters and 10 letterwinners returning.
