North is a 6-4 guard from South Plains Junior College in Levelland, TX. He averaged 12.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in 2015-16. North also shot .392 from three-point range, making 65 three-pointers in 28 games. North was named first team All-Region and earned Fiesta Bowl tournament MVP honors. The Texans were 21-9 overall, 12-4 in conference play.
“Deontae is a kid we recruited in high school and we have seen him play a lot over the last four years. He is a 6-4 wing who can shoot, score and put it on the floor at this level,” said Viking Coach Tyler Geving. “He was also very successful in a very good junior college league in Texas.”
Originally from Corona, CA, North spent his freshman season at Long Beach State, averaging 3.4 points in 12.8 minutes per game.
North attended Centennial High School where he was a first-team Open Division All-CIF selection and MaxPreps.com 3rd team All-State selection. He averaged 18.8 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.6 steals as a senior and was named the Riverside Press-Enterprise Inland Empire Player of the Year. North led his team to a 29-4 record and 10-0 league mark. The Huskies reached the Southern Section Open Division Championship and the Division I CIF Finals.
North is the fifth student-athlete to sign with Portland State for 2016-17. The Vikings have three starters and 10 letterwinners returning.
