The Portland State basketball program has released its 2016-17 season schedule. The coming year will include 13 home games and 16 road games for the Vikings.
Portland State will continue to play at the Peter W. Stott Center although construction on the new Viking Pavilion is already underway. The east half of Stott Center has been leveled, however the west side including the Stott Center arena and the new weight room is intact. The completion date for the new Viking Pavilion is Feb. 2018.
The Vikings will have four preseason home games and seven preseason road games before undertaking the Big Sky Conference schedule. Feature games will include the season-opener at Arizona State on Nov. 11, then four West Coast Conference opponents on the road, including Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, San Francisco and Portland.
PSU also faces a pair of Western Athletic Conference foes as it hosts Texas Rio Grande Valley and plays at CSU Bakersfield.
Portland State will open conference play at home with its first three games against North Dakota, Northern Colorado and Sacramento State. The Vikings hope to get off to a fast start with five of the first seven games at home. After that it is seven of 11 games on the road to close out the Big Sky slate.
Due to the Big Sky Conference’s unbalanced schedule, Portland State will not host Idaho or Eastern Washington, and will not travel to Idaho State and Weber State, playing each team just once.
The Big Sky Conference Tournament takes place Mar. 7-11 in Reno, NV at the Reno Events Center. All 12 teams take part in the tournament.
Eighth-year Head Coach Tyler Geving returns eight letterwinners including three starters. He has signed seven new players in the off-season. PSU comes off a 13-18 season in 2015-16, going 8-10 in Big Sky play. PSU reached the Big Sky Tournament quarterfinals before losing to eventual champion Weber State.
