Mayhew, a 6-2 shooting guard, played one season of basketball at Hill College in Hillsboro, TX and will be a sophomore for the Vikings next season. He is originally from Flower Mound, TX where he attended Marcus High School.
Mayhew adds a much-needed outside shooter to the Viking team. He averaged 13.7 points per game for Hill College as the team finished 22-9 on the season. Mayhew made 82-168 three-pointers for the season, a .488 percentage. He shot .468 from the field overall and .892 at the free throw line, which ranked second in the nation at the NJCAA level.
PSU ranked last in the Big Sky Conference in three-point field goals made and three-point percentage in 2015-16. Mayhew’s addition should help remedy that in 2016-17.
“We needed to address that in the off-season,” said Geving. “We have had our sights set on a guy who can knock down three-point shots and he is the man. Michael shot 48%, and he did it on a lot of attempts. But, he’s not only a three-point shooter, he can put it on floor, he can pass it and he has a high basketball IQ. So we’re not just getting a shooter, but a complete basketball player.
“Michael is also an excellent student who is majoring in business. And, he has three years to play coming out of a junior college, so that is good for us as well.”
Mayhew is the fourth student-athlete to sign with Portland State for 2016-17. The Vikings have three starters and 10 letterwinners returning.
